The historic city of York benefits from easy access to and from most of the country, including the A1 which runs from London to Edinburgh. York is also just 45 minutes drive away from Yorkshire’s biggest conurbation, Leeds, via the A64.

Parking in the centre of York can be quite difficult as narrow medieval streets make up much of the city centre, leaving little available room for stationary cars. Luckily though, York does have a number of useful on-street and off-street parking options to choose from.

There are also 6 park and ride locations serving York, providing you with free secure parking – and with most locations requiring just a short bus journey to the city centre.

On-street parking
Parking charges in all of York city centre’s on-street pay-and-display spaces are generally the same, at a reasonable hourly rate. On Micklegate, you can find the cheapest fares but there are limited spaces available.

There is a maximum stay of 2 hours on all on-street pay-and-display spaces before 3pm – and they typically operate from 8am-6pm every day. Please also be aware that many of York’s inner city streets are pedestrianised and off-limits to all vehicles from 10:30am-5pm.

The City of York Council runs 15 public off-street car parks in and around York – most of which provide a competitive price for parking, with pocket-change hourly rates. Bishopthorpe Road car park (Bishopthorpe Road, York, YO23 1NA) is a prime example of this – however, this location in particular has a very limited number of spaces.

NCP operate 2 car parks in the city centre, both ideally located for access to both the train station and the historic old town centre. York Station South (24 Queen Street, York, YO24 1AD) is a 24 hour off-street car park close to York train station and the city centre.

For easy access to the National Railway Museum, there is no better choice than Leeman Road car park (Leeman Road, York, YO26 4XJ – follow the link to reserve your space via JustPark) – offering you secure parking at an affordable rate. This car park operates 24 hours a day, Monday-Sunday, with a particularly appealing daily and overnight rate for the city.

Public transport
Disabled parking
There is a distinct lack of disabled spaces in York’s off-street car parks, with few offering more than a handful of spaces. However, parking is free for Blue Badge holders in any of the council-run pay-and-display car parks in the city.

There are a number of on-street parking options for Blue Badge holders, including exclusive access to designated disabled bays in certain areas of the city. Blue Badge holders can also park, if necessary, on any single or double yellow lines for a maximum period of 3 hours (unless there are signs stating any loading bans).

Parking restrictions & event days
On-street pay-and-display spaces in York generally operate from 8am-6pm each day, with a maximum stay of 2 hours before 3pm. A flat rate evening charge for parking between 6pm and midnight applies on all days.

Much of the city centre south of York Minster is completely pedestrianised from 10:30am-5pm. A useful map of all the pedestrianised streets can be found on The City of York Council website.

Overnight, weekends & bank holidays
Drivers can park overnight in many of the secure off-street car parks in York, as most run a 24 hour service. Overnight parking is not available, however, in any of York’s park and ride locations.

On-street pay-and-display spaces operate from a later time of 1pm-6pm on Sundays, but Bank Holidays are generally no different to weekdays when it comes to parking rates.

Nearby attractions
York has almost 2,000 years of history nestled within its walls – including quirky, must-see streets such as the Shambles. York Minster is also well worth a visit since it is one of the largest cathedrals of its kind, and is visible from pretty much anywhere in the city. Further afield, just outside the city centre, is the highly-recommended National Railway Museum – a great day out for all ages.
