Information about parking in Oxford
Driving to Oxford is relatively straightforward, with the A40 and the A34 ferrying traffic from the London-to-Birmingham M40 that runs just East of Oxford.
Parking in Oxford can be difficult though, with much of the city centre and beyond inside Controlled Parking Zones, where parking is strictly limited to pay-and-display bays for visitors. Alternatively, there are a good selection of off-street options to choose from, which is the recommended approach when looking to park in Oxford.
5 park and ride locations serve Oxford from pretty much every direction surrounding the city, offering a parking service at a fraction of the cost of the more central car parks – and only requiring a short bus journey to and from the city centre.
JustPark provides information on parking spaces across Oxford, many of which are reservable – covering both on-street and off-street options, from driveways to car parks.
Additional Information
Some additional information about parking in oxford, to cater to all your parking needs
On-street parking
Parking on-street in Oxford can be very difficult, with many streets restricted to permit holders only. On-street pay-and-display charges start at around £1.50 per hour during controlled hours, which typically operate from Monday-Friday 8am-6.30pm. There are a limited number of spaces though, and at busy times getting in and out of the city centre by car can become increasingly difficult.
To find information on available on-street parking spaces across Oxford, you can use the JustPark parking map.
Off-street parking
Oxford City Council operates 5 car parks in the city centre at a generally affordable rate. Their Gloucester Green car park (Gloucester Street, Oxford, OX1 2BN) is well located for drivers visiting Oxford University or the central shopping areas, providing over a hundred spaces.
Oxford’s 5 park and ride locations are also worth considering – conveniently situated to the North, East, South and West of the city, just a short bus journey away from the centre. Full details of routes, locations and fares can be found on the Oxford City Council website.
JustPark offer thousands of reservable off-street spaces across the city – with a particularly good selection to choose from in popular areas, such as near the O2 Academy Oxford or Oxford City football ground.

There is not an integrated public transport system in Oxford, but there are several companies that serve the city with rail and bus services.
Disabled parking
Disabled drivers displaying their Blue Badge may park free of charge for an unlimited amount of time in any pay-and-display space, across Oxford’s Controlled Parking Zones and even in areas reserved for resident permit holders.
Blue Badge holders can also park on single or double yellow lines for a maximum of 3 hours, provided there are no loading bans signalled locally.
Some of Oxford’s city centre off-street car parks do not adopt the Blue Badge scheme or have any disabled spaces at all, so make sure to check available facilities before you park.
You can also filter when searching on JustPark to show all our parking spaces with disabled access in Oxford (select this option by clicking on ‘Filters’ on the search results page).
Parking restrictions & event days
There are multiple Controlled Parking Zones throughout the city of Oxford and each have their own fares and timings, so you must always check restrictions before you park.
Many zones are solely reserved for resident permit holders and Blue Badge holders – and as a result, parking at almost any time in these zones will not be possible for visitors.
On the JustPark map, we’ll only show you spaces which you’re allowed to park in and are not restricted.
Overnight, weekends & bank holidays
Parking restrictions and controlled fares in any of Oxford’s on-street pay-and-display spaces remain in force on all Bank Holidays. Generally this also applies to Sundays, however there are a handful of locations which don’t charge on Sundays – but always check signs when you park.
Overnight parking is readily available in Oxford, with many of the off-street car parks operating 24 hours a day – with some even offering a reduced rate for cars that park after a certain time in the evening.
Oxford City Council recommend using Gloucester Green car park (Gloucester Street, Oxford, OX1 2BN) which provides a special rate for overnight parking. However, this location closes at midnight and cars parked overnight cannot be recovered from this secure car park until 7.30am.
