Nottingham Forest was founded in 1865. At the first meeting, the team purchsed a dozen tasselled caps in the colour of 'Garibaldi Red' - named after the leader of the Italian 'Redshirts' freedom fighters, the clubs official colours were then established. The first official football match took place on 22nd March 1866 against Notts County.
