Charlton Athletic F.C. was founded in 1905 in the Charlton area of south-east London. The club rose through the leagues to enjoy its most successful spell in the 1930s and 1940s, including finishing as runners-up in the top division in 1937.

Charlton won the FA Cup in 1947, defeating Burnley in the final — the club’s greatest achievement. Over the years, they have alternated between divisions, enjoying periods in the Premier League in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
