What's Changed on Oxford Street?

The first phase of Oxford Street's pedestrianisation began on 26 October 2026. The stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street – nearly a kilometre, including the Selfridges and John Lewis flagships – no longer allows cars, buses, taxis or bikes. Mayor Sadiq Khan has backed the idea since 2016, and the plan was approved in February 2026.

This first phase is a test. The Oxford Street Development Corporation expects the transition to be complete by spring 2027, with more than 50 new trees, two new public squares and over 100 seats and dining tables. Accessibility groups have raised concerns about reduced bus and taxi access, and the test phase is meant to gather feedback on that.

For drivers, the practical change is simple: you can't drive along the closed stretch, so park on the surrounding streets and walk in.
