What Is the UEFA Nations League?

The UEFA Nations League is UEFA's competitive replacement for meaningless international friendlies, running every two years since it launched in 2018-19. It works like this:

  • Four divisions (League A, B, C and D): Europe's 55 national teams are split by ranking, with League A containing the strongest sides.

  • A group phase first: Teams play each other home and away, then move up or down between divisions based on results.

  • A finals tournament for the best of League A: The four League A group winners go into a knockout weekend — two semi-finals, a third-place play-off and a final — to crown the overall champion.

  • Promotion and relegation on the line too: Even outside the top four, finishing position in your group determines who moves up or down a division for the next edition.

Who's won it so far?

  • 2018-19: Portugal beat the Netherlands 1-0 in Porto

  • 2020-21: France beat Spain 2-1 in Milan

  • 2022-23: Spain beat Croatia 5-4 on penalties in Rotterdam, after a 0-0 draw

  • 2024-25: Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties in Munich, after a 2-2 draw — making Portugal the competition's first two-time winners

The 2026-27 edition is the fifth. The group phase runs from 24 September to 17 November 2026, with League A's quarter-finals in March 2027 and the finals weekend in June 2027 (host city still to be confirmed).

England's 2026-27 Nations League Fixtures at Wembley

England were drawn into League A, Group 3, alongside Spain, Croatia and Czechia — a repeat of their Euro 2024 final opponents in Spain. Three of their six group games are at home, all at Wembley:

  • England v Spain — Saturday 26 September, 7:45pm kick-off. Sold out.

  • England v Czechia — Tuesday 6 October, 7:45pm kick-off. Tickets on sale now.

  • England v Croatia — Thursday 12 November, 7:45pm kick-off. Tickets on sale now.

(Their away fixtures — Czechia, Croatia and Spain again — fall on 29 September, 3 October and 15 November respectively.)

With Wembley regularly hosting crowds of up to 90,000 for England fixtures, getting your travel and parking sorted early matters more than it might for a smaller ground.

Getting to Wembley Stadium

Wembley's postcode is HA9 0WS, signposted from the A406 North Circular if you're coming via the M1, A40 or M25.

Road closures are extensive on matchdays.

Brent Council runs an event day parking permit zone covering the roads around the stadium — only residents and businesses with a permit can park there on a matchday, roughly 8am to midnight on main approach roads.

Streets including Engineers Way, Fulton Road, Empire Way and the roads around Olympic Way see full closures in the hours before and after kick-off. Trying to find a casual space on-street near the ground isn't realistic — plan to park further out or book ahead.

Where to Park at Wembley Stadium

Book parking near Wembley Stadium in advance with JustPark. With thousands of reservable spaces available nearby, you can secure a private driveway or car park spot within walking distance of the stadium before they go.

Booking ahead means:

  • You arrive knowing exactly where you're headed

  • You avoid inflated on-the-day prices

  • You can extend your parking session through the JustPark app if you're delayed after the match

  • You get access to quieter residential streets, away from the busiest congestion points near the ground

Public Transport to Wembley

Three stations serve the stadium, all within a 15-20 minute walk of the ground:

If you're parking further out and finishing your journey by rail or Tube, allow extra time — matchday crowds mean stations get busy well before kick-off, and again for a while after the final whistle.

Congestion Charge and ULEZ

  • Congestion Charge does not apply at Wembley — the stadium sits outside the central London zone.

  • ULEZ does apply. Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all of Greater London, including Brent and Wembley. Non-compliant vehicles pay £12.50 a day, charged for each calendar day the vehicle is on the move within the zone — so a late finish that crosses midnight can mean two charges. Check your vehicle against TfL's ULEZ checker before you travel.
