How we shifted focus from parking to painting for one day only

JustPark holds an Away Day once a quarter. Typically we would bring the whole company together to give them an update on what our goals were and how we were performing.

And then once we'd done that, we'd do an activity for a bit of team bonding.

So, how did we do it remotely?

First and foremost this Away Day was focused on presenting our 2021 strategy, (no spoilers, but it is very exciting and we have lots to come!).

Everyone involved worked hard to set up this day for the company. At JustPark each and every person contributes to the success of the company. Therefore, understanding our goals for the year is a key factor in executing this strategy.

How did we make it engaging?

Ensuring the company is engaged with our strategy is really important, so how did we make it engaging? We asked Lewis, our Chief Operating Officer, for his key tips to making a presentation engaging.

"Communicating where we want to be, and how we are going to get there is really important for motivation and transparency. It also allows our employees to challenge where they think we should be doing things differently. Whilst we are all working from home, communicating complex strategies can be challenging - nobody wants to sit on a Zoom call all day looking at presentations! So, we kept the afternoon really dynamic - with lots of presenters (with different styles), a team activity, a great remote icebreaker, and of course lots of laughs. Top tip - don't let any presentation last any longer than 15 minutes!" (Lewis Tasker, COO)

In order to kick off the event and ensure we're set up to work together as a team we started with an ice breaker. We asked everyone to take a picture of something they have achieved during lockdown.

The icebreaker was a great opportunity to hear and see what people have been achieving outside of work during lockdown. Some people had created wonderful things and taught themselves new skills. I really enjoyed showcasing some of my artwork as well.” (George Spencer, Product Manager)

Getting our craft on

The painting went down a treat, The Paint Cub sent out our painting kits and we had our own tutor John Hainsworth to take us through step by step.

Everyone loved it and it was amazing how different everyone's take on a classic tree was. Take a look at some of our creations here!

We asked a couple of the team for the first hand opinions of painting activity.

"A relaxing and therapeutic activity that helped me see that I still loved being artistic, even if I have no design sense. I found it really interesting that while everyone was being instructed in the same way, we all ended up with very different looking products.” (Ed Heaver, Customer Support Shift Lead)
“The painting experience was world-class, it proved to be a worthy breakout session, relaxing and thought provoking. My daughters, Connie & Harriet, simply loved it. So much so that in the evening after the session they continued to paint with Harriet (8 years old) declaring that she would like to work for JustPark one day!” (Nick Maley, Sales Director)

Wrapping up

One of the most important parts of the day is opening the floor to questions, ideas, and opinions. Every single employee is a key player in achieving our goals, and therefore it is vital to have the input of everyone who is going to help up achieve all the targets we have set.

We are all very much looking forward to the future of JustPark and this is only the beginning of our plans to come!
