The machines were broken and wouldn't take coins. There were loads of people, a lot of them elderly trying to download the app to pay but being in the middle of nowhere, signal was too poor. Luckily, I managed it but a lot of people didn't! Parking should have been free while the machines weren't working

Meters were covered with notices stating they did not work and there was no point complaining to the Portland Bill Lighthouse because the car park was now the responsibility of the Crown Estate. Large groups were gathered round the meters, some without phones but with cash they could not use (even though the meters had slots for coins). Even though my own phone had a very low battery, I eventually managed to download the app and pay for the time I spent there.
Charges are extortionately high and will have a profound effect on the number of visitors to Portland Bill.
