tight spaces. poor lighting and signage. I tried to park in an open area and was told by a passing taxi driver not to do as as I would get a ticket! there was a customer services chap peering out of his booth and I was not sure if he was waiting to help or place a parking ticket! Better signs would help.

Absolutely fine, no issues at all. You walk out of the car park straight onto the end of Platform 1 @Paddington mainline station. The route is painted onto the walkway.
